Hi! My name is JunLin, but you can call me Dolphin — a childhood name (乳名) given to me by my mom that’s used within the family or among close friends. It’s been with me since the very beginning, and I’ve come to embrace it as part of my story. I was born and raised in a small town in southwestern China called Dali, the home of the Bai minority people (白族), which is the reason why I decided to name this portfolio Bai Design:carrying on the heritage that part of me and made me who I am.
At the age of seventeen, my parents decided it was time for me to embark on a new adventure, and to a seventeen-year-old, nothing sounded better than complete freedom. That’s how I ended up attending high school in Colorado by myself and later studying Outdoor Product Design & Development at Utah State University. This cross-cultural perspective has shaped the way I design. From China, I carry with me an appreciation for heritage, craft, and collective values; from America, I have embraced individuality, exploration, and innovation.
Together, these experiences allow me to focus on details, listen to different stories, and approach design with curiosity and humility. I don’t design to prove I’m better than anyone else, but to share how I see the world. My goal is for people to see and feel something new through my work — the way I see it through my own eyes. At the heart of my process is a belief in Kaizen (改善): that no design is ever truly final, and that every iteration is a chance to make something more thoughtful, more human, and more meaningful.
